Strategy[edit | edit source]

Bolt is the strongest elemental attack spell for Mages and Wizards. Its Level 1 has 2 range and 5 targets like Blaze Level 2 and Freeze Level 2, and there is no enemy with resistance to lightning. It is the only spell that attacks 13 targets or has 3 range at Level 2 and 3. Bolt Level 4 is the strongest single-target spell, doing massive damage to a single enemy. Accordingly, each of the four levels has a high MP cost, and most users learn its higher levels much later than those of the other spells. Thus, casters must optimize its use in battle as much as possible in order to accomplish more good than they would with less powerful spells.

Traditionally, the protagonists of the Shining Force games have been able to use both Egress and Bolt, with Max in Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention being a notable exception. Because only the protagonists learn Egress, their using Bolt can run the risk of leaving the party unable to flee the battle if something goes awry, though this risk is eliminated if the party brings along an Angel Wing.
