Galm is a character in Shining the Holy Ark and Shining Force III.

Background[]

Galm is a member of the Vandal race. He provides very little information about his past, true abilities, or underlying motives, and acts according to his own, mysterious ends. Unlike other Vandals seen in the series, Galm acts against restoration of the "Thousand Year Kingdom" - A period during which the Vandal race reigned supreme. Though he rarely interferes with the affairs of others directly, his goals put him into conflict with other Vandals and their worshippers who fear him due to his overwhelming power. Though he is rumored, even among Bulzome priests, to be stronger than Bulzome himself he only shows his capabilities in rare circumstances, instead relying on his cunning manipulations for the majority of his work, and in Shining the holy Ark, he acts purely to aid the force. However It is these same manipulations that put him into occasional conflict with the player-controlled forces in Shining Force III.

In Shining the Holy Ark, Galm was either resurrected or awakened by Sabato, in order to gain information on the Vandal's Thousand Years Kingdom. Galm resides near Enrich, in a mansion that appears haunted and is stated to have killed Julian's father, setting in motion many of the events that occur over the course of Shining Force III.

In Shining Force III, he is seen the first time when the forces face up against Basanda who begs him to not interfere. During this conflict, Julian attempts to challenge Galm, who effortlessly casts him into a waterfall. He appears a second time, when Medion's force is confronted by Dessheren. Unimpressed by her apparenty weakness, Galm interferes with Dessheren's plans, defeating her in a single blow. Much later, Galm provides Julian with the key to defeating bulzome, but expresses a desire to first test the Force, though requesting that Gracia be denied use of the Elbesm Staff - against which he would be forced to act at full power. but at the sole condition that do not uses his Elbesem Staff. The conflict itself turns out to be another manipulation - to allow Julian to get his revenge, enabling him to move on and face Bulzome without distraction.

In the secret post-credits ending, Elise and Galm are discussing the future. Elise reveals that Galm's plotting was responsible for nearly all of the events in Shining Force III, and had merely been using Julian as a tool to defeat Bulzome - allowing Galm to retain his position as the apex Vandal, and continue to his work as a watcher - possibly implying that Vandals are forbidden from directly confronting one another.

Strategy[]

Galm is fought only once during the course of the game, as the last battle of the chapter 5 of scenario 3. Use zone damaging magic to get rid of his small force around him quick and then focus on him, so it shouldn't be a big threat. But keep in mind that Gracia will not have his Elbesem's staff, so he lose 2 of his magics and his attack abilities are useless, so will do nothing more than a support or do some of his inferno spells. And, due to the fact that Honesty is looking for the staff Gracia throw away, she also cannot be playable for this battle.

Trivia[]

  • Galm's right arm is always hide in his robe and is so never seen, even when he fight or uses magic. No information is given if the arm is cut or if he hides his true power.
  • Interestingly, looking at the model in the premium disk, Galm has no right arm.
  • By so, Galm is left-handed.
  • Galm's portrait and artwork evolved from Holy ark to shining force so he was given a far more scary appearance
  • Galm's power during his battle with Julian may be a trick in which he retains his true power in order to manipulate Gracia and Julian to have them to dispose of Bulzome for him.
  • Since Galm want Bulzome to be defeated but does not do it himself, it can be inferred that Vandals cannot defeat each other or they have rules that unallow them to do so, since it is strange to imagine Galm, the "strongest of all the Vandals" to be inferior to Buzome
  • In premium's disk, a special battle with Galm was started, but the game crashes if forced to play with only tentacles of the kraken but neither the kraken nor Galm are present, strangely enough, but maybe the developers wanted to show the player the real power of Galm and then changed their mind so he could keep all his secrets.
