Gong is a playable male monk in the games Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention and Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon.

Background[]

According to a Shining Force I world book, Gong is "A monk who was continuing on his journey to temper his body and soul. Midway through his journey, he happened to encounter the Force and joined up with them. Like the other members of the giant race, he once passed day after day looting and pillaging, but a certain event caused him to reform. It's said that he became a monk as a means of atonement." (Translation by O'Neill of the Shining Force Central forums)

He says when he meets Max that he has fought the evil of Runefaust for many years and wants to aid him so he joins the Shining Force.

In the alternate universe of the GBA remake, Gong tells Max that he was lead to him by following a star, and insisted on joining Max's cause before Max could even explain exactly what his goal was. At this time, Max thought he was only on a scouting mission to the western Gate.

Personality[]

Gong is shy and polite, but is also a strong and tough fighter, eager to join Max in his cause to fight Runefaust. As a wandering Monk, he has some shabby tan and blue clothes, a grey pack on his back and a blue headband when he is the Monk class. When he is promoted, he gets a new wardrobe that looks very Egyptian.

The Resurrection of the Dark Dragon incarnation of Gong is resourceful, patient, disciplined, and loving towards nature. He also has a "pushy" side. When Max first meets him, Gong tells Max outright that he would be joining him. Max is hesistant towards this, as that he had told Gong nothing about himself at this point beyond his name, but Gong refuses to take "no" for an answer, leading Max to comment that he is "pushy" after he leaves Max for HQ.

Strategy[]

Getting Gong to Join[]

As soon as you start the first battle have Max walk out of the battle. Do not use Egress or you will have to walk all the way back. After you walk out of the battle go to the right to Gong's Hut. There you will meet Gong and he will immediately join you.

Using Gong[]

Gong is the only heal user that has very good defense and speed along with a decent magic resistance; this allows him to sit comfortably on the front line and adjust his role to suit the situation. Out of all the unarmed fighters Gong, along with Domingo are able to catch up to other Force Members much easier if left behind. In Gong's case, this is because he is able to use his healing spells to gain the much needed XP to catch up. Early on, Gong is able to compete with the early-mid game fighters and can be efficiently put on the front line with less worry then any other healer.

His rate of learning new spells is slower then the other healers. There are better damaging late-game fighters then Gong and he never excels over any other fighter. Even as a healer, Khris or Torasu will often fulfill the role of healer better.

  • Unlike in the original version, levels do not stack; therefore, if promoted early, a spell learned at level 12 unpromoted must be learned at level 12 promoted.
  • — indicates the character has already learned the spell.
  • An empty field means the character cannot learn up to that spell's level.

Quotes[]

In Headquarters: "If it's healing and fighting you need, I'm your man. I will try my best!"

In headquarters if he is not with the party: "Pick me! Pick me! C'mon, Max!"

On vessel: "Yes, sea travel is quite nice. I should have planned a trip long ago."

Trivia[]

Gong likes to draw scenery, as well as write poems about nature.
