Ken is a playable Knight in the games Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention and Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon and an NPC in the games Shining Force Gaiden and Shining Force CD.

Background[]

Though a Royal Guardiana knight, according to a Shining Force I world book Ken is only an apprentice when he is sent to the Gate of the Ancients with Max by King Guardiana. Indeed, at 17 years old he is the youngest of the Royal Knights. He harbors a secret crush on Mae, but being five years older she views him as a little brother.

However, by the time of Shining Force Gaiden he has apparently succeeded Varios as head of the Guardiana Royal Knights and has an adolescent son whose features are a blend of Ken and Mae's, so perhaps he was able to win the heart of Varios's stony-faced daughter in the end.

Though Resurrection of the Dark Dragon is an alternate universe version of Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention, Ken's background, personality, and role in the story are unchanged.

Ken is light-skinned with a light body and brown tail. He has brown hair and blue eyes. His shield color is blue.

Personality[]

Ken is an unusually good-natured centaur, playful and of a lighthearted disposition. He greatly admired Max even before he was appointed to lead the mission to the Gate of the Ancients, but kept his admiration hidden because of his infatuation with Mae, who openly despised Max. This admiration apparently has not faded even as Ken approached middle age, as suggested by the way he sees Max in Nick. Though the same cannot be said for his lighthearted spirit, Ken is still an enthusiastic soldier at the time of Shining Force CD.

Strategy[]

In The Legacy of Great Intention[]

Ken will usually have very good Attack in the first half of the game. Ken serves as an early game knight, focused on teaching the player about movement of units in particular. Depending on his stats progress as he levels, on rare occasions he can end up stronger then Mae.

Ken is far weaker than most of the knights, as Mae and Pelle are far better options than Ken. Either Pelle or Earnest can also act as a replacement for Ken. Depending on how you level Arthur, Ken can be either the second or third worst knight/paladin in the game, Vankar being a worse option than Ken.

Powers & Magic[]

Ken can cast no spells and has no powers.

Quotes[]

  • At Headquarters, in active party
Ken: "At last! A chance to become a real knight! Count me in!"
  • At Headquarters, not in active party
Ken: "I think I'll go stir crazy if you don't let me out of here soon!"
  • At the castle of Guardiana
Ken: (spots Apis in Nick and Ruce's force) "Apis! My son! You are NOT going!! It's much too dangerous!"

Ken: "Ruce, who is this stranger you've brought with you?"
Ruce: "Ken, I am honored to introduce our leader. He's not from Gardiana, but he helped us plan our adventure."
Ken: "Something about your eyes... You remind me of my old friend, Max."
Ruce: "No. Those days are behind you now."

Trivia[]

It is possible to skip Ken entirely (Before going to see the king in Guardiana, walk toward the town entrance until you encounter a man wearing blue close to the guards. Block his path and force him to block the path of the guards at the entrance, making sure to leave enough room for you to slip through before the man in blue leaves his forced position. If done correctly, you should be outside the town without your Shining Force members. Completing the first mission without returning to get your members will trick the game into continuing the story from there, preventing the starting members from ever joining.)
