Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon
Shining Force Gaiden
Shining Force CD
Lug is a playable Warrior in the games Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention and Shining Force Gaiden, and in their respective remakes, Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon and Shining Force CD. His name is mistranslated as "Luke" in both Legacy of Great Intention and its remake.
Background[edit | edit source]
Despite his youthful appearance, at the time he joins the party in Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention, Lug is already 64 years old and an experienced warrior. In the remake, Lug looks even younger, but his veteran status really shows through at the beginning of the game, when Max is still fairly unsure of himself, opting to reprimand the 'less professional' members of the Shining Force when Max was too shy to do so himself. In spite of his own veteran status, Lug shows immense respect for senior veterans such as Gort.
According to a Shining Force I worldbook: "When he was very young he was attacked by a monster, and was saved by a dwarven warrior. As a result, he became enraptured with the gallant figure of the warrior." (Translation by O'Neill of the Shining Force Central forums)
After the events of Shining Force I, Lug remained in the Guardiana army and helped Anri rebuild the country. By the time of Shining Force Gaiden, which takes place 20 years later, Lug has a son named Ruce. It is not known whether Ruce was born before Shining Force I or in the intervening 20 years. Nothing is known about who the mother was, either.
Lug is tan-skinned with dark hair, a big pink nose, and squinty eyes. His uniform consists of a blue and grey tunic with brown belt, boots and gloves. In the remake, his appearance is largely the same, but with a smaller, pointier (more 'normal') nose instead.
Personality[edit | edit source]
According to a Shining Force I worldbook:
"Cheerful and good humored, he has an air of naivete about him. He has a reckless and irresponsible side as well, and his personality is not particularly suited for a warrior... but when he steps onto the battlefield, his personality undergoes a complete change, and he'll show you a vicious fight." (Translation by O'Neill of the Shining Force Central forums)
Lug apparently has great initiative, as evidenced by his efforts in the rebuilding of Guardiana and his doings in Cypress. This is also apparent in RotDD, where he would often snap orders at the others in the early missions (where Max was still fairly shy and uncertain about his leadership position). In the original version of the game, when Max reaches the fort of Balbazak, there are large gaping holes in its walls. In RotDD, the fortress was completely solidified, and the Shining Force was not able to enter it until Lug opted to be the one to plant Dr. Crock's deadly Blazebomb at the base of the fortress - creating the gaping holes in its walls.
Strategy[edit | edit source]
In The Legacy of Great Intention[edit | edit source]
Lug is a front-line fighter with a strong attack and good defense. As he is a dwarf, mountain terrain does not effect him, making him excel at certain parts of the game. At first he is stronger then Gort, though pairing the two together makes for a strong walking front-line.
He is easily replaceable by any number of Force members by mid-game and Gort will eventually grow stronger then him once the two are promoted.
In Shining Force Gaiden and Shining Force CD[edit | edit source]
Lug is potentially the most powerful of the five Gladiators of Shining Force CD. His HP and Defense start low, but they grow rapidly from the time he joins until his levels are maxed, and his already high Attack grows at a modest but steady rate. At the level cap of 20 promoted, equipped with the Earth Axe, Lug would have the highest Attack and third highest Defense of any character in Shining Force CD.
Sadly, this is all academic, since Lug is available only for the last battle of Shining Force Gaiden/Book 1, and he and Mayfair are the only two characters in Shining Force CD who can only be used in one Book. Thus, without some very tedious and pointless grinding, you will never see Lug completely rise above the mediocre HP and Defense he has when he joins.
While you only have him for a very brief time, there are two very important points to using Lug. First, he has the Sword of Hajya in his possession, so make sure he gives it to Nick immediately. The sword is necessary to winning the battle, and Nick is the only one who can equip it. Second, Lug joins equipped with a Battle Axe, a weapon which has by that point become obsolete. Have one of your characters bring a spare Great Axe to the Evil Monster battle, give it to Lug, and make sure he equips it so that he can be useful as more than just a delivery boy for the Sword of Hajya.
In Resurrection of the Dark Dragon[edit | edit source]
Powers & Magic[edit | edit source]
Lug can cast no spells and has no powers.
Quotes[edit | edit source]
- In Headquarters, in your party: "I'm ready, Max! You line them up, and I'll knock them down!"
- In Headquarters, not in party: "This is pretty boring. When can I get into the fight?"
- In the castle of Cypress: "Hold it, Woldol. You're staying here... thanks to Lug. By the way, were you looking for this?" ~ Lug held up the Sword of Hajya. ~
- In the castle of Guardiana
- Ken: "We can help King Nick restore his arm!"
- Lug: "We owe him at least that much..."
- When he joins in RotDD: "I'm Luke. I'm a fighter. I joined the Knights to be like the legendary Gort. I'm as tough as anybody! Put me in the front line anytime!"
- Facing Dark Dragon in RotDD: "Listen, dragon! I'm Luke, the dwarf warrior! You better watch out, 'cause I'll split that head open with this axe!"
Trivia[edit | edit source]
It is possible to skip Lug entirely (Before going to see the king in Guardiana, walk toward the town entrance until you encounter a man wearing blue close to the guards. Block his path and force him to block the path of the guards at the entrance, making sure to leave enough room for you to slip through before the man in blue leaves his forced position. If done correctly, you should be outside the town without your Shining Force members. Completing the first mission without returning to get your members will trick the game into continuing the story from there, preventing the starting members from ever joining.)
