His main purpose is to give the player a centaur heavy front line for the battles that follow soon after. As such, Vankar is a "front-line filler" knight and a 'average' fighter.
Compared to Mae and Pelle, Vankar is redundant, as both of them will out perform him. Earnest will also act as a better replacement for Ken, as Earnest isn't as redundant as Vankar. Therefore, Vankar could be considered the worst or second worst knight/paladin, depending on how you level and promote Arthur.
